The Man Who Was Thursday by G.K. Chesterton Zach A writes: By turns hilarious and terrifying, Chesterton’s The Man Who Was Thursday is a lyrical search for truth in a world where nothing is what it seems. Luckily such an undertaking is not complete without anarchists, car chases, and a gentleman’s duel. Publisher: Penguin Classics Summary: In an article published the day before his death, G.K. Chesterton called “The Man Who Was Thursday” “a very melodramatic sort of moonshine.” Set in a phantasmagoric London where policemen are poets and anarchists camouflage themselves as, well, anarchists, his 1907 novel offers up one highly colored enigma after another. Publisher: Vintage Summary: Having never seen the famous 1970s television series based on Graves’ historical novel of ancient Rome and being generally uneducated about matters both ancient and Roman, I wasn’t prepared for such an engaging book.
